Five stages of precision parts machining

Precision parts machining refers to the precision machining of precision components for precision equipment. The precision requirements are very high, which means we need to understand not only the specific material requirements and common machining techniques, but also the stages of the precision parts machining process. Below, the machine operators at Yamei Precision share the five stages of precision mechanical parts machining:


1. Rough Machining:
Primarily to improve productivity. Removes the machining allowance from the machined surfaces and creates a fine datum.


2. Semi-Finishing: 

Primarily removes defects that may have resulted from rough machining, and completes the machining of secondary surfaces. A certain machining accuracy must be achieved to prepare for the finish machining stage, ensuring an appropriate finishing allowance.


3. Finish Machining: 

In the finish machining stage, high cutting speeds, small feed rates, and depths of cut are used to remove the machining allowance left from the semi-finishing stage, ensuring the surface of the precision mechanical parts meets the technical requirements of the drawings.


4. Final Finishing: 

Primarily used to reduce surface roughness or strengthen the machined surface, mainly for surfaces with very high surface roughness requirements.


5. Ultra-precision Machining

This mainly involves using precision cutting, mirror grinding, precision lapping, and polishing methods to achieve a workpiece machining accuracy of 0.1-0.01 μm and a surface roughness value of ≤0.001 μm.
